Can the way we eat influence how long we live?

The Mediterranean diet provides some of the strongest evidence that long-term dietary patterns may matter for longevity.

In older adults, greater adherence to Mediterranean-style eating has been associated with a lower risk of death from any cause. It has also been associated with lower cardiovascular mortality.

This does not mean that one diet can guarantee a longer life.

Lifespan is influenced by many factors, including genetics, smoking, physical activity, body weight, medical conditions and access to healthcare.

But nutrition is one factor we can influence.

The Mediterranean diet brings together several characteristics associated with long-term health. It emphasizes vegetables and fruits, whole grains, legumes and nuts. Olive oil is the principal source of added fat, while fish provides protein and omega-3 fatty acids.

At the same time, red and processed meats and highly processed foods play a smaller role.

Over time, this pattern can support cardiovascular and metabolic health — two important foundations of healthy aging.

The longevity connection is therefore not about a single ingredient.

It is about maintaining a dietary pattern that supports health over many years.

Importantly, the association between Mediterranean-style eating and lower mortality has also been observed in populations over 70 years of age.

Healthy eating is not only an investment for the distant future. It can remain relevant throughout later life.

The Mediterranean diet cannot determine how long any individual person will live. But current evidence supports it as one of the dietary patterns associated with healthier aging and greater longevity.
