Does Keto Help You Lose Weight?
Yes. A ketogenic diet can help people with excess weight lose weight, often quite rapidly during the first weeks.
By sharply reducing carbohydrates, the body begins using more fat for energy and produces ketones, an alternative fuel made by the liver.
But the weight lost during the first few days is not entirely body fat.
Why Does Weight Drop So Quickly?
There are 3 main reasons.
1. The Body Loses Water
The body stores carbohydrates as glycogen, mainly in the liver and muscles.
Glycogen is stored together with water. When carbohydrate intake falls, glycogen stores decrease and some of that water is released.
This explains why the scales may show a rapid drop during the first week.
2. Hunger May Decrease
Some people experience less hunger while following keto.
Higher protein intake, changes in appetite and the effects of ketosis may contribute.
When people feel less hungry, they may naturally eat fewer calories without deliberately counting them.
3. Eating Fewer Calories Reduces Body Fat
Over the following weeks and months, sustained weight loss requires the body to use more energy than it receives from food.
Keto can make this easier for some people by limiting food choices and reducing appetite.
Ketosis does not eliminate the need for an energy deficit to lose body fat.
Can Keto Keep Weight Off for Years?
A ketogenic diet can help people lose weight during the first months, but maintaining that weight loss is more challenging.
A 2023 meta-analysis of 110 randomized clinical trials found that stronger carbohydrate restriction was associated with greater weight loss during the first 6–12 months. Beyond 12 months, more moderate carbohydrate restriction was associated with the greatest weight reductions.
These findings suggest that strict keto is not necessary to maintain weight loss over time.
