What Is an Anti-Inflammatory Diet?

Healthy aging insight visualization for What Is an Anti-Inflammatory Diet?

Inflammation is a normal part of the body’s defense system. It helps us respond to infection and injury.

The problem is chronic low-grade inflammation — persistent inflammatory activity that is associated with many conditions that become more common with age.

Diet is one factor that may influence these processes.

But what exactly is an anti-inflammatory diet?

It is not one specific diet. And it does not depend on eating a few foods marketed as “anti-inflammatory.”

Instead, the term describes an overall pattern of eating that emphasizes nutrient-rich, minimally processed foods.

In practice, this usually means eating more:

vegetables and fruits,

whole grains,

legumes,

nuts and seeds,

fish,

and foods providing unsaturated fats, such as olive oil.

At the same time, healthier dietary patterns generally contain fewer ultra-processed foods, processed meats, refined carbohydrates and foods high in added sugars.

Why does the whole pattern matter?

Foods contain many nutrients and bioactive compounds that are consumed together. Fiber, unsaturated fats, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds may influence inflammatory and metabolic pathways in different ways.

Research therefore increasingly examines the combined dietary pattern, rather than trying to identify one food that causes or prevents inflammation.

This is also why labels such as “inflammatory food” can be misleading.

One meal does not determine whether your body is in a state of chronic inflammation. And adding one supposedly anti-inflammatory ingredient cannot compensate for an otherwise poor dietary pattern.

Several well-established healthy dietary patterns naturally share many of these characteristics. The Mediterranean diet is one example, but it is not the only way to eat.

For healthy aging, the practical principle is simple: focus on the quality of your overall diet and the foods you eat regularly over time.
