Healthy aging is influenced by what we eat over many years.

The good news is that a healthy diet does not need to be complicated.

Long-term research consistently points toward a group of foods that can form the foundation of healthy eating as we age.

Vegetables and fruits provide vitamins, minerals, fiber and a wide range of natural plant compounds. Eating a variety of them helps support cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Whole grains provide fiber and nutrients while generally having a more favorable effect on blood sugar than highly refined grains.

Nuts and legumes provide plant protein, fiber, minerals and healthy fats. They can also help replace foods higher in saturated fat or more heavily processed.

Unsaturated fats are another important part of the picture. Sources include olive oil, nuts, seeds and fish. Choosing these fats in place of less healthy fats can support cardiovascular health.

Healthy dietary patterns can also include nutritious animal-based foods. Fish and selected dairy products, for example, can contribute valuable protein and nutrients.

What matters most is the overall pattern.

A diet built around high-quality foods provides more than individual vitamins or nutrients. It supports several aspects of health at the same time.

This matters because healthy aging is also multidimensional.

It includes maintaining physical function and cognitive health. It includes reducing the risk of chronic disease. And it means supporting the body well enough to remain active and independent for longer.

The aim is therefore not to find one perfect food.

It is to make high-quality foods the foundation of everyday eating — consistently, over many years.
