Can a number tell you whether your diet is inflammatory?

Researchers have developed tools that try to answer this question. One of the best known is the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII).

But it is important to understand what this score actually measures.

The DII is not a blood test. It does not measure inflammation directly in your body.

Instead, it estimates the inflammatory potential of your overall diet.

The index was developed using scientific literature examining relationships between dietary components and inflammatory markers. It can incorporate more than 45 dietary factors, including nutrients and bioactive compounds.

Information about dietary intake is used to calculate a score.

A higher DII score represents a dietary pattern considered more pro-inflammatory. A lower score represents a pattern considered more anti-inflammatory.

Researchers can then investigate whether people with different scores have different health outcomes.

This makes the DII useful in nutritional research. It has been studied in relation to cardiovascular disease, metabolic health, cancer, mortality and other health outcomes.

But a dietary score and inflammation in the body are not the same thing.

Inflammatory activity can be assessed separately using biomarkers such as C-reactive protein. These markers are influenced by many factors beyond diet, including infections, body weight, smoking, physical activity and chronic disease.

A DII score therefore cannot tell you whether you currently have chronic inflammation.

For everyday health, calculating an inflammation score is usually less important than the underlying dietary pattern.

A diet centered on nutrient-rich, minimally processed foods remains the more practical focus for long-term health.
